HIR Academic Writing Contest

The HIR Academic Writing Contest is Harvard International Review's global writing competition for middle and high school students, designed for anyone who wants to sharpen their analytical writing and learn to argue like a policy analyst. Through themed writing prompts, a structured editing process, and a live oral defense, participants get real practice turning a global affairs topic into a tightly argued, publication-ready article.

Whether you're new to writing about international affairs or already following global politics closely, this contest gives you a genuine platform: strong essays are recognized with medals, certificates, and website features from one of the most established student-run publications in the world.

Who can participate:

  • Students in grades 7–8 (Junior division) and grades 9–12 (Senior division)

  • U.S. students across all 50 states, D.C., and U.S. territories

  • International students worldwide, writing in English with American spelling

  • Anyone interested in global affairs, policy, technology, or culture — no prior writing-contest experience required

Contest structure:

  • Junior division writes on a single set theme: "Inventions that Changed How We Live"

  • Senior division chooses from three themes: Global Culture in the Digital Era, Security in a Multipolar World, or Technology, Innovation, and Power

  • Write an 800–1,200 word article in AP style, with all sources properly cited via hyperlinks

  • Finalists deliver a live, 15-minute oral defense of their essay before a panel of judges

  • Three submission rounds run through the year, so you can enter whichever fits your schedule

Awards & recognition:

  • Top entries: Gold, Silver, or Bronze medals with certificates and website recognition

  • Other strong entries: High Commendation, Outstanding Writing, or Commendation certificates

  • All finalists: the experience of defending original research live before judges

Why participate:

  • Learn to write like a global affairs analyst, not just a student essayist

  • Get direct feedback through the live defense format

  • Build a portfolio piece backed by a well-known international affairs publication

  • Stand out with medal-level recognition and public website features

  • Choose from three submission rounds a year, so there's always a next deadline

The HIR Academic Writing Contest is an excellent opportunity for any middle or high school student who wants to build real analytical writing skills, get published-level feedback, and gain recognition from a globally respected platform. Submit before the next round's deadline — August 24, 2026 for the Summer round, or January 2, 2027 for Fall/Winter — to start your entry.
